THE AIR CONDITIONING HELPS TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF INDOOR AIR Experts from various national and international organizations in the air conditioning sector, conclude that air conditioning systems, used for heating and cooling, particularly when integrating air renewal, can contribute to reducing the concentration of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the air interior and, therefore, decrease the risk of transmission. Madrid, May 8, 2020. At the time of the year in which we find ourselves, temperatures begin to rise and with it the massive use of air conditioning systems. Taking into account the confinement situation derived from the COVID-19, it is of special interest to highlight that air conditioning is a good ally to face the high temperatures that we will have shortly. HVAC systems and equipment improve people's quality of life, providing comfort and contributing to healthier environments. In addition to achieving the right temperature and humidity, they are able to renew and filter the indoor air, removing microparticles from the environment, thus making the air you breathe cleaner. Experts from different Associations such as ASHRAE (American Society for Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning), REHVA (Federation of European Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Associations) and ATECYR (Spanish Technical Association for Air Conditioning and Refrigeration) have concluded that ventilation and Filtration provided by HVAC systems, used for heating and cooling, helps to reduce the concentration of viruses and bacteria in the indoor air and therefore the risk of transmission. Currently, the situation derived from the pandemic has also brought to light various benefits of air conditioning equipment: HVAC facilities are safe and necessary to achieve optimal conditions of well-being and hygiene inside buildings, improving indoor air quality. Unconditioned spaces can cause heat stress in people, which can harm those in a convalescent situation. The most recommended is to maintain indoor temperature conditions during heating, between 19ºC and 21ºC, and, during refrigeration, between 24ºC and 26ºC, with a relative humidity of 40% -60%. Adequate ventilation of spaces, independent or integrated in air conditioning systems, guarantees a permanent renewal of air, and helps to eliminate particles suspended in the air, in such a way that it reduces the risk of transmission of infectious diseases. In order to reduce virus transmission, it is not recommended to stop air conditioning and ventilation systems and installations, and good maintenance of them is very important.
